To help victims of the earthquake in Haiti, BB&T Corporation on Jan. 15, 2010, said it will contribute $100,000 to Project HOPE (Health Opportunities for People Everywhere) to assist with recovery efforts.
BB&T has been a long-time supporter of the Washington, D.C.-based relief organization. Project HOPE President and CEO John Howe has been a member of the BB&T corporate board since 2005.
"On behalf of our employees, I want to express our sympathy for the victims and their families as well as the thousands of survivors who continue to have such dire needs," said BB&T Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Kelly King. "As Haiti continues to assess the damage from this horrifying earthquake, we want to do all that we can to support the unbelievable humanitarian work by Project HOPE."
Project HOPE has three relief efforts underway in Haiti:
- The U.S. Naval Hospital Ship "Comfort" – Project HOPE is partnering with the U.S. Navy to provide 1,000 hospital beds and 20 pallets of medical supplies on the U.S. Naval Hospital Ship "Comfort."
- Supply warehouse in Dominican Republic – Project HOPE is helping to secure refrigerated warehouse space in the Dominican Republic for medical supplies. The supplies will be transferred to Haiti as needed.
- Community hospital support – Project HOPE medical volunteers will be heading to Haiti to support community hospitals outside the capital city of Port-au-Prince that are providing overflow medical care. The volunteers will be bringing badly needed portable medical units.
