I have share certificates from a bank that was bought by BB&T. How can I get them converted into shares of BB&T?
BB&T's Shareholder Services department maintains information on all past mergers. To exchange shares in a predecessor company for BB&T shares, typically you must send any certificates along with a signed note containing your request.
Certificates should be sent by registered mail, return receipt requested, and insured for an amount sufficient to cover the bond premium that would be charged to replace the certificates if they were lost or destroyed.
Mail the certificates to:

I have some shares of BB&T to sell, but I do not know their original cost. Can you tell me what my cost basis is?
Unfortunately, no. BB&T's records do not indicate the price paid for any outstanding shares. Whenever you buy or sell shares of stock in any company, including shares purchased through a dividend reinvestment plan, you should keep a record of the purchase price, which you will also need to know for tax purposes.

Can I buy or sell stock directly through the company?
No. Purchases and sales must be made through a registered broker. However, if you are a registered holder of at least one share of BB&T stock, additional shares may be purchased through the company's Dividend Reinvestment Plan. Stock must be registered in your name and not in street name to participate in the plan. Shares held in the plan may be sold directly through our transfer agent.
