Unit Investment Trusts

If you’re looking for the advantages of diversification and a regular income stream without the expense of a comparable portfolio of individual securities, consider Unit Investment Trusts (UITs).

A UIT is a fixed securities portfolio sold in a limited number of units, generally to investors who wish to receive regular income.

Features

A UIT’s portfolio usually consists of corporate or municipal bonds, although some UITs consist of stocks.

  • Typically, a UIT has a finite life, since all bonds in the portfolio either mature or are “called” (redeemed by the issuer prior to the maturity date).
  • When you invest in a UIT, you receive interest payments and your principal is returned over time.
  • If you invest in an Equity UIT, bear in mind that units will be redeemed at a price that could be more or less than the original amount paid.

Like all investments, UITs involve investment risk, including loss of principal. You may also be charged a management fee by the investment advisor. Talk with a BB&T Investment Services, Inc. Investment Counselor to learn whether UITs are a good fit for your particular situation.
