ATM Security

ATMs are a fast and easy way to withdraw cash, check account balances, transfer funds and more. But they can be the target of crime, including a new type of fraud called ATM skimming.

ATM Security Tips

Here are general tips to keep in mind as you use ATMs:

  • Observe your surroundings.
  • Park as close as possible to the ATM.
  • Leave the area if you see anyone or anything suspicious.
  • Go to another ATM if it is obstructed from view or poorly lit.
  • Take a companion with you, especially at night.
  • Minimize the time you spend at the ATM by having your card out and ready to use.
  • Give the person in front of you the privacy you expect. Allow them to move away from the ATM before you approach it.
  • Cancel your transaction and leave immediately if you notice someone or something suspicious.
  • Call the police if anyone follows you from the ATM.
  • Be suspicious if the ATM looks unusual or has any exposed wires.
  • Report problems with ATMs to the appropriate financial institution.
  • Stand between the ATM and anyone waiting nearby so that others cannot see you type your PIN or the transaction amount.
  • Cover the keypad with your hand when entering your pin.
  • Once you have completed your transaction, take your money, card and receipt and leave immediately.
  • Don't use the same PIN for more than one card.
  • Change your PIN regularly.

ATM Skimming

What Is ATM Skimming?
The theft of personal details from an ATM is called ATM skimming.

How It Works
In this scam, a card-reading device is mounted on top of the ATM card entry slot. The device captures your account information from the magnetic strip on your card. Hidden cameras or fake keypads record your PIN.

Then the thieves combine your account number and PIN. They manufacture counterfeit cards to make purchases or withdraw funds from your accounts.

Signs of ATM Skimming

  • The card entry slot has an extra device attached to it.
  • The keypad has an extra layer over the buttons.
  • There is a new camera on the ATM.
  • There is an unusual new device mounted near the ATM.
  • The ATM has cracks, glue or tape residue on it.
  • The ATM has exposed wires coming out of it.
