What are the terms and conditions of online banking?

Security Information and System Requirements

Is BB&T OnLine secure?

Yes. Ensuring the security of your personal information online is a top priority for BB&T. The instant you log on to BB&T OnLine, before your user ID and password leave your computer, we encrypt them both using 128-bit Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology. This security ensures that only BB&T has access to your account information.

To further protect your privacy while you are using the service, we will automatically log you out of Online Banking after several minutes of inactivity

What does 128-bit SSL encryption mean?

SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer. This technology allows users to establish sessions with Internet sites that are secure, meaning they have minimal risk of external violation. Once inside the BB&T OnLine, you are secure through our use of SSL technology.

Encryption is the scrambling of information for transmission back and forth between two points. A key is required to decode the information. When you request information about your accounts, the request is encrypted and sent to BB&T. We then decode your request for information and send it back to you in an encrypted format. When you receive it, your information is decoded so you can read it. Because your account information is being transmitted between you and BB&T, encryption protects your account information so it cannot be intercepted and read by a third party.

Why should I always click the Logoff button to exit BB&T OnLine?
It is very important that you properly and securely end each Online Banking session by clicking the Logoff button at the top right of the screen. Logging off is the only way BB&T OnLine knows you have ended your session. If you leave without properly logging off - by going directly to another website, for example - and then leave your computer unattended, someone else could access your computer and return to your banking session. At that point, they would have access to your personal account information and could initiate transactions as if they were you.
What if I forget my password or user ID?

If you forget your BB&T OnLine password, you can reset it from the BB&T logon page by clicking Locked Out/Forgot Password.

If you forget your user ID, please call Customer Service at 888-BBT-ONLINE (888-228-6654).

  • Checking
  • Money Market
  • Savings
  • Credit Card
  • Line of Credit (LOC)
  • Mortgage
  • Personal Loans
  • Certificate of Deposit (CD)

You can view all debits and credits to your accounts. Images of checks and deposit slips posted during the past 180 days are also available.
What are account nicknames?
Account nicknames are an easy way to personalize your account and, once assigned, are used to identify your accounts throughout BB&T OnLine. Nicknames are only stored within BB&T OnLine so only those accounts opened online are affected.
If I have both business and personal accounts with BB&T, can I view them together?
Yes. You can also view business accounts for multiple entities/TINs. To combine account views, contact Customer Service at 888-BBT-ONLINE (888-228-6654).
What happens if I open a new account after establishing my BB&T OnLine Profile?

How can I find a specific check or deposit?

There are a variety of ways to find a check or deposit through BB&T OnLine:

  • Browse the transactions list presented on the Account History page. You can also view and print electronic images of recently posted (within the past 180 days) checks and deposit slips.
  • Search for a transaction by using the Search tool on the Account History page. The Advanced Search tool lets you search by amount and/or date range.
  • Find a specific check or deposit by viewing your online statements on the Statements tab. You also can select the current statement or search through statements for the past 24 months.

Pending Transactions

What are pending transactions?
Pending transactions reflect transaction activity and holds affecting your available balance. Transactions in this section include both debits and credits. Some pending deposit amounts may include funds that are being held. Some pending debits may reflect a merchant hold on your account, which may or may not be the final amount posted to your account.
Why doesn't my pending transaction reflect the actual amount I spent?

Some merchants request an authorization for a "general" amount or an amount they estimate you will spend (for example, including a gratuity on a restaurant authorization different from the amount of the tip you leave). The amount authorized can be higher or lower than the actual amount of the transaction. A merchant authorization shows as a "pending transaction" and places a "hold" on funds in your account, affecting your available balance. When the transaction posts, your account is charged the actual amount of the transaction and the authorization/hold goes away. Examples include:

  • Restaurant or Salon - An authorization is requested prior to a tip being added. Some merchants will estimate a tip amount in the authorization causing your pending amount to differ from the actual amount you spent. The final purchase amount posted to your account will include the actual tip you included.
  • Pay-at-the-Pump - An authorization is requested prior to dispensing fuel. Most pay-at-the-pump gas purchases are initially authorized for $1. Only the actual amount of the purchase will post to your account.
  • Hotel/Cruise/Car Rental - An authorization in the amount equal to the entire stay plus an estimated amount for incidentals may be made. This can also be true for car rentals and cruise lines, which may include deposits and/or other fees.
Why can't I see all individual ATM or Check Card transactions?

Certain transactions, such as ATM or Check Card PIN-based transactions, will roll up into a single, summary item. For example, you made the following purchases using your Check Card and entering your PIN:

  • Grocery store $43.00
  • Car wash $15.00
  • Pharmacy $25.00

In your pending transaction data, you would see: ATM/PIN/Electronic - Debits: $83.00

How do pending transactions affect my available balance?
Your available balance is the amount you have to draw upon less any holds. This includes any pending deposits, purchases, and withdrawals less holds on your account, i.e., pending ATM deposits only have $100 of the deposit immediately available. Most pending transactions will post to your account within 24 to 48 hours.
Which account types display pending transactions?
At this time, pending transactions are provided for checking and savings accounts.

If I pay my mortgage with an online transfer, how will funds be credited to principal and interest?
If you transfer the exact amount due for the current payment, your principal and interest account will be credited in the same amounts as if you had mailed in a check.
What if I transfer less than my regular mortgage payment amount?
If the transfer amount is less than a regular payment amount, and the payment is due for the next month, the funds will post as a reduction of the principal amount.
What if I want to transfer more than my regular mortgage payment amount?

If you transfer more than the current payment due, the funds will be credited in one of two ways.

If the transfer is for more than the regular payment amount but less than two payments, it will post as a regular payment. Any fees that are due will be paid, and the remaining amount will be credited toward reducing the principal amount.

If the transfer is double or more than the regular payment amount, it may post as two payments. Any amount over the sum of two regular payments will first go to pay off any fees that are due and up to $5,000 will be counted towards reducing the principal amount. Any amount over $5,000 will be held in a suspense account.

BB&T Online Bill Payment

How much does it cost to use Online Bill Payment?

Online Bill Payment is free to all BB&T clients. Depending on your account, you may incur a service fee if you choose to access your accounts online through Quicken or Quickbooks. Monthly fees are outlined in the chart below:

BB&T OnLine Free
Unlimited Online Bill Payment Free
Quicken Access Fee $7.95 a month
Quicken for Business Clients Access Fee $9.95
QuickBooks Access Fee $14.95 a month
How does Online Bill Payment work?

Online Bill Payment is a free service that is automatically included with BB&T OnLine. You may use the bill payment service through BB&T OnLine, Quicken, QuickBooks, or Microsoft Money.

Your bill payments will be sent to payees you designate in the form of either a paper check or an electronic funds transfer. All payments made through Online Bill Payment are covered by our Online Bill Payment Guarantee.

How do I make payments?
To use Online Bill Payment, you must first create a list of payees - the individuals and organizations to which you plan to send payments. You will then schedule payments to them by choosing the date you want your payment to be sent, also known as the processing date. Your payment will be delivered within five business days of your processing date, if it is sent by check; within two business days if the payee accepts electronic payments; and on the next business day if the payment is made to BB&T.
When do the funds for a payment leave my checking account?

For electronic payments, funded by a BB&T deposit account, funds from your account are "held" two days before the delivery date to allow for processing. The hold reduces your available balance by the amount of the payment. The funds for your payment must be available on the processing date. However, the funds are not actually withdrawn from your account until two days later, after 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time on the payment delivery date.

For check payments, funded by a BB&T deposit account, no funds are held, and your available balance is not reduced on the payment processing date. It is not until the check actually posts to your account that funds are withdrawn. The funds withdrawal date will vary depending on when your payee deposits the check payment. Although funds are not held when your paper-check payment is processed, sufficient funds must be available in your account on the processing date for your payment to process.

For payments funded by a MyLink Card or Ready Access card, either electronically or in the form of paper drafts, funds will be withdrawn from your account on the processing date.

How do I know when a payment has been processed?
After BB&T processes your payment, your Payment History section in Bill Payment is updated. Your payment history provides all the details about your payment, including the payment status. The status of a processed payment will display as "processed." If you deleted a payment prior to processing, or a payment could not be processed due to nonsufficient funds, the status will display as "cancelled." Information about the payment method (electronic transfer or paper check) is available in the Details section.
How can I review my bill payments after they have been processed?
To review your payment details after a payment has been processed, see your Payment History section in Bill Payment. Your payment history automatically shows the past 30 days of activity. You may also search for payments to a specific payee, from a specific account, or during a specific time period. Your history displays the date sent, account debited, payee name, amount, status, and details. Payment details include the payment method: electronic or paper-check.
How much bill payment history can I view online?
The Payment History section within BB&T OnLine Bill Payment allows you to view any bill payment that has been processed in the last 24 months. For access to bill payment information older than 24 months, please call
888-BBT-ONLINE (888-228-6654).
How do you determine which bill payments can be delivered in 2 days and which can be delivered in 5 days?
BB&T utilizes the fastest means possible to deliver your payments. If your payee accepts electronic payments, we send your payment by electronic transfer. Electronic payments take 2 days to process and deliver. If your payee does not accept electronic payments, we generate a paper check on your behalf and mail it. Processing and delivery of paper checks takes 5 days.
Can a paper-check payee be converted to an electronic payee?
Yes. Because BB&T wants to deliver your payment as quickly as possible, we continue to establish new electronic connections to payees. Periodically, you may notice that a paper-check payee converts to an electronic payee. Occasionally, an electronic payee may convert to a paper-check payee.
Will my Overdraft Protection work with this service?
Yes. There will be no change to the account features you currently enjoy, if you access your account information through BB&T OnLine.
Can I schedule a bill payment to be processed today using funds that were deposited today?
BB&T will make the first $100 of a pending deposit available immediately for online bill payments, provided that the deposit is made at a BB&T branch location prior to 2:00 p.m. or before 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time at a BB&T ATM. The amount available could be less than $100 if ATM or BB&T Check Card withdrawals were made during the day of the deposit. The full amount of your deposit will not be available for online bill payments until the deposit transaction has been posted to your account and is reflected in your current balance.
Who can I send payments to?
A payee can be any company, agency, organization or individual with an address that includes a valid U.S. Postal Service ZIP code, including APO/FPO (military) addresses.
How far in advance can I schedule a payment?
Payments can be scheduled up to one year in advance.
How large or small can a payment amount be?
Payments can be in any amount up to $100,000.
How many payees can I have?
You may have as many payees as you like. There is no limit to the number of individuals or organizations you may add to your payee list.
How soon can I start making payments to a payee that I have just added to my list?
You may begin making payments immediately.
How many payments can I schedule during a single month?
There is no limit to the number of payments you may schedule per month.
What if a payee address or other payee-account information changes?
Payee information can be easily updated. We recommend that you verify your payee information regularly. Paper-check bill payments that are delivered to an incorrect mailing address will be returned to the account holder's mailing address. If this happens, please update the payee's address and schedule a new payment.
Can I update my payee list and, if so, how often?
You may add, remove or edit payees on your list anytime and as often as you wish.
Can I get a copy of a paper–check bill payment?

For BB&T deposit accounts, bill payments processed as paper checks are available as check images in your online account history, which you can review through Online Banking.

Check images will not be available for bill payments funded by a MyLink card or Ready Access card through OnLine Banking. If you require a copy of a bill payment check, please call 888-BBT-ONLINE (888-228-6654). Fees for check copies may be applied to your account.

Why do paper–check bill payments look different from my normal check images in my online account history?
Our paper-check bill payments are printed by a third party. These checks appear different from your normal checks to help distinguish them from checks you write yourself. All bill payment check numbers are six digits, starting with the two-digit prefix "98". Bill payment check numbers are not sequential.
What address is printed on paper–check bill payments?

For payments funded by a BB&T deposit account, the name and address of the account holder is printed on each paper–check bill payment as the payor. The payee name and address printed on a paper check matches the payee name and address information you entered in BB&T OnLine Bill Payment.

For payments funded by a MyLink card or Ready Access card, BB&T will be printed on each paper–check bill payment as the payor. If the payment is returned to BB&T, BB&T will contact the client to determine how to resolve the situation. The address printed on the paper–check is as follows:

5075 BB&T Operations
PO Box 619
Wilson, NC 27893

Does BB&T use a third party to process payments?
BB&T partners with a third-party provider to process and deliver payments. All support and claims issues are handled by BB&T. All claims and any client service issues should be directed to our BB&T Online Support team at 888-BBT-ONLINE (888-228-6654). BB&T Online Support hours are 6:00 a.m. to midnight Eastern Time, seven days a week excluding Christmas Day, December 25.
Can I modify or delete a scheduled payment that has not yet been sent?
Yes. All payments can be either modified or deleted up to 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time on the processing date.
How do I stop a payment that has already been sent?
Please contact BB&T Online Support at 888-BBT-ONLINE (888-228-6654). BB&T Online Support hours are from 6:00 a.m. to midnight Eastern Time, seven days a week, excluding Christmas Day, December 25. Stop payment fees may be charged to your account, per the Financial Services Pricing Guide available at your local branch.
What can I do if I am notified that one of my payments was not received?
If this happens, call BB&T Online Support at 888-BBT-ONLINE (888-228-6654). BB&T Online Support hours are 6:00 a.m. to midnight Eastern Time, seven days a week, excluding Christmas Day, December 25. Our staff will investigate the matter for you and will notify you of the findings. We will refund the payment amount to your account if the issue has not been resolved within 10 business days of receiving the error notice. Please note that those funds will be again withdrawn from your account if the case has been resolved and the initial bill payment posted with the payee.
What happens if my bill payments are late or not received?
As long as the conditions are met for the Online Bill Payment Guarantee, BB&T will reimburse you for any late fees or interest penalties. For payments not received, BB&T will stop the payment and refund your account until posting information has been received and verified. You will also receive provisional credit until posting information has been received and verified.

Online Statements

What is an online statement?
An online statement is an electronic copy of your monthly account statement that can be viewed through BB&T OnLine. You can save and print your statement. For legal purposes, a printed version of an online statement is the same as a paper statement mailed through the U.S. Mail.
What are the advantages of receiving my statement online instead of through the mail?

Security:

  • Online statements are secure. They are provided to you through the secure BB&T online banking platform.
  • Online statements reduce the risk of identity theft and fraud by eliminating paper copies.

Convenience:

  • Online statements are available for viewing within hours after they are produced, much faster than waiting for your paper statements in the mail.
  • Online statements are available at your convenience; simply log on to your BB&T OnLine account to view your statement.
  • Online statements can be downloaded and saved to a disk, hard drive, or portable storage device.
  • Online statements can be printed for your records.
Do I need special software or tools to view my online statements?
Your online statement is a Portable Document Form (PDF) file, which can be opened with Adobe Reader. If you do not have this software, you can download it at no cost from www.adobe.com.
How do I save or print my online statements?
On the Current Statements page, click Save in the Recent Statement column for the account statement you want to save. To save or print copies of previous statements, click on the link for Previous Statements and click Save in the Download Statement column. The PDF of your statement can also be printed from your computer.
Which accounts are eligible for online statements?

If you are an existing BB&T OnLine client, you may view online statements for eligible accounts. Current eligible accounts include:

  • BB&T personal checking accounts
  • BB&T personal savings accounts
  • Other deposit accounts that are part of your current consolidated statement, including individual statements and consolidated (grouped) statements.
  • BB&T home equity loans and lines of credit
  • Any BB&T loan obtained or originated through a dealership (for example, an auto, boat, or RV loan)
  • BB&T personal credit card accounts

Please note that clients who have requested that their account be hidden in BB&T OnLine will not see their statement online. Also note you are not currently able to view your Smart Money or AMA (Asset Manager Account) statements online.

How much statement history can I view?

The amount of available statement history will depend on the type of account:

  • Personal checking and savings accounts: your current statement and up to 24 months of previous statement history.
  • Home equity loans and lines of credit: your current statement and at least 12 months of previous statement history, if applicable. Statement history for these accounts will expand to 24 months as the history becomes available.
  • Any BB&T loan obtained or originated through a dealership (for example, an auto, RV, or boat loan): your current statement and at least 12 months of previous statement history, if applicable. Statement history for these accounts will expand to 24 months as the history becomes available.
  • Personal credit cards: your current statement and previous statement history through July 2007, if applicable. Statement history for these accounts will expand to 24 months as the history becomes available.
How can I stop receiving paper statements?

Clients who are the primary or secondary account holders can request paper suppression for their eligible account(s). Current eligible accounts include:

  • BB&T personal savings accounts
  • Other deposit accounts that are part of your current consolidated statement. This includes individual statements and consolidated (grouped) statements.

  • For personal checking and savings accounts, you will be able to select Online Only in the Delivery Method column next to the account you wish to request online statements for. You are also eligible, but not required, to register for online statement alerts for these accounts in order for BB&T to inform you that your statement is available.
  • For BB&T home equity loans or lines of credit, BB&T personal credit cards, or any BB&T loan obtained or originated through a dealership, you must register for online statement alerts in order for BB&T to inform you that your statement is available online.
  • On-screen instructions will guide you through the process of registering for alerts, if applicable.
  • Please note that you will need to agree to the Online Statements E-Sign Agreement and confirm that your statement delivery method is correct.

Please note that your request may take up to one full statement cycle to process.

Why do I have to accept the Online Statements E-Sign Agreement in order to stop receiving paper statements?
By selecting I agree to the Online Statements E-Sign Agreement, you acknowledge you are able to electronically access and print electronic communications. If you do not agree, you may select I disagree and return to BBT.com.
How will I know when my statement is available online?

Statement alerts will be sent to your registered email address once your statement is available online.

For any account associated with a payment due (for example, a BB&T home equity loan or line of credit, any BB&T loan obtained or originated through a dealership, or a personal credit card account), you must register for online statement alerts. You can easily make payments to these accounts right from the Current Statements page.

For personal checking and savings accounts, you are also eligible, but not required, to register for online statement alerts.

How do I register for online statement email alerts?

There are two ways to register for statement alerts if you are not already a BB&T alerts customer.
