The demand for services to address the critical needs of our communities is immense. You can see it everywhere—from our school systems, where hunger prevents children from focusing on their educations, to our streets and homeless shelters, where many, including veterans, search to escape oppressive heat or bitter cold.
BB&T Lighthouse Project
To address the needs of our communities, our associates participate in an annual community service effort, the BB&T Lighthouse Project.
This year, our 10th year, we completed almost 1,200 community service projects. We provided more than 84,000 volunteer hours and helped positively change the lives of more than 1.5 million people.
Since we began the Lighthouse Project in 2009, we've completed more than 11,000 community service projects, providing more than 640,000 volunteer hours and positively impacting the lives of more than 16.5 million people.
NC School for the Deaf
The NC School for the Deaf (NCSD) provides deaf and hard-of-hearing children a language-rich education in Raleigh. To assist the school, a BB&T IT Services team purchased and installed virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality systems into their classrooms. The VR system is the first of its kind at the school. It will enable their educators to plan and deliver lessons that incorporate VR into their core subject areas. BB&T looks forward to continued support of this partnership, as we believe in the humanitarian power of education to serve the youngest members of our community.
Bayou City Relief
Bayou City Relief was created in 2017 to focus on rebuilding communities in Houston, TX that were devastated by Hurricane Harvey. In particular, the Bear Creek neighborhood was heavily impacted by the hurricane flood waters, and many residents are still displaced. In some cases, water levels inside the homes had exceeded six feet. To help this community, a local BB&T team provided landscaping work, and they painted exteriors, front doors and trim—even an entire home and detached garage. The BB&T team also removed debris and piles of dirt from the area, and placed 15,300 sq. ft. of sod across the yards of seven homes. They finished the job by pressure washing the exteriors, driveways and sidewalks.
True Justice International
True Justice International's mission is to restore humanity with mercy and compassion on a global scale. In particular, they aim to reach those affected by human trafficking while providing shelter, protection and therapeutic resources. To help this organization, a BB&T Community Banking team cleaned a newly purchased transition house in New Bern, NC for human trafficking victims. They painted, scrubbed, and landscaped—and they even assembled and installed a porch swing. They also bought towel sets, dishes, pots and pans, utensils, cleaning supplies, bathroom decor and put together 10 fully stocked bathroom totes for newly rescued victims. The team's efforts allowed True Justice to place the new house into operation ahead of schedule and to save their precious resources needed for rescue and recovery efforts.
Alta Vista Children's Shelter
The Alta Vista Children's Shelter in Clarksburg, WV provides a safe haven for children that fosters hope. It's the only shelter in the state licensed to accept children as young as six, and it provides a therapeutic environment that nurtures group interaction, teaching the children life skills and behavior management. A BB&T Community Banking team helped them by painting and updating a 2,500-square-foot play room, dividing the area into three zones: reading and art, a play zone and a gaming zone. In addition, the team purchased an art desk and chairs, easels, paints, paint aprons, book shelves, toys and a 55-inch TV.
HopeWorks' mission is to provide support and advocacy for people affected by partner violence, and to engage the community in creating the change required for prevention. The Columbia, MD organization provides emergency shelter and transitional housing for survivors of domestic and sexual violence, including human trafficking. To support these efforts, BB&T Commercial Credit teams worked to recondition the premises of their shelter, which included painting the bedrooms and playroom, installing new closet systems in each bedroom, adding storage space to the playroom, and creating a play wall for the kids' playroom.
Hissom Tabernacle Food Pantry
Hissom Interdenominational Mission (HIM) helps the poor and the needy by ministering to their basic needs—food, clothing and shelter—and has been doing so for over 80 years in Charleston, WV. A BB&T Processing Services team in Charleston, WV elected to support HIM due to rising homelessness in their community. HIM is just a five-minute walk from the team's office, and the needs for food and basic necessities are very apparent. This team purchased much-needed food items to stock the mission's food pantry and provide support for anyone in need.
