BB&T Lighthouse Project

Serving as a beacon for neighbors in need

Crucial needs

There's a heavy demand for services that meet the critical needs of our communities. You can see these needs everywhere. Children have a hard time staying focused in school when they're hungry. People without homes need safe places that offer food and shelter.

BB&T Lighthouse Project

To help communities in need, BB&T created the BB&T Lighthouse Project. It's a company-wide community service effort that brings together thousands of associates to impact the lives of millions.

BB&T started the Lighthouse Project in 2009. In the past 10 years, we've completed more than 12,000 community service projects. Volunteers have spent over 700,000 hours working to serve more than 18 million people in need throughout our communities.

In 2019 alone, we completed nearly 1,100 community service projects. Associates volunteered more than 70,000 hours to support the needs of more than 1.3 million people.

Miles Perret Cancer Services

Miles Perret Cancer Services (MPCS) helps people in the Acadiana, LA, area who are fighting, surviving and living with cancer.

BB&T Insurance associates helped MPCS by buying supplies for patient care kits. Associates bought personal care items, snacks and puzzle books. They then assembled care kits that MPCS can give to anyone using their services.

Open Door Café

Helping Overcome Poverty’s Existence, Inc. (HOPE), is a nonprofit working to improve living conditions for communities in southwest Virginia. The group helps people in need get housing, food, clothing, health care, job training and employment.

HOPE also founded the Open Door Café, which serves meals to anyone, regardless of their ability to pay. BB&T associates in the Wytheville, VA, branch made and served dinner at the café as part of the Lighthouse Project. For those in need, associates also donated nearly 300 meal tokens that can be redeemed at the café.

Sidekix Prom for Children with Special Needs: Once Upon a Dream

Sidekix is a nonprofit in Wilson, NC, that promotes inclusion among children with special needs and those with typical needs. BB&T Client Care Center associates decided to host the group's first-ever prom. The event was especially geared for children with special needs in grades 8 through 12.

Lyon County Board of Education

The staff at Lyon County Elementary School in Eddyville, KY, wants their school to be a comfortable place for all students to learn and grow. To help the staff achieve their goal, BB&T associates transformed a room at the school into a friendly and soothing haven for autistic children. This "chill zone" works well as a coping space for children on the autism spectrum.

The Barboursville Veterans Home

The West Virginia Veterans Home in Barboursville, WV, offers a comfortable place to live for military veterans in need. As part of the Lighthouse Project, Community Banking associates came together to make space in the home for residents to socialize and enjoy meals together.

Generations Group Home

Generations Group Home in Greenville, SC, helps boys who are victims of sexual abuse to overcome their experiences. It's the only group home in South Carolina to offer this service. As part of the Lighthouse Project, the BB&T Mortgage Lending team in the area supported the group home by landscaping the entire, almost 30-acre property.
