Frequently asked questions about contactless cards
What are contactless payments?
Contactless payments use short-range proximity technology to securely complete payments between a contactless card and a contactless-enabled checkout terminal. A contactless card is a chip card that uses near-field communication (NFC) technology, which enables close-range payments. When you tap your contactless BB&T debit or credit card at the contactless-enabled checkout terminal near the Contactless Symbol , your payment is sent for authorization.
How do I get a contactless BB&T debit or credit card?
BB&T will begin issuing contactless debit and credit cards in spring 2019. If you're an existing cardholder, you will receive your new contactless enabled card at the time of re-issue or if your card needs to be replaced. You can request a contactless BB&T debit or credit card by contacting your local financial center or calling the number on the back of your card.
How do I know if my BB&T debit or credit card is a contactless enabled card?
If your BB&T debit or credit card has the Contactless Indicator on the front, then your card has the contactless capability.
How do I pay using a contactless card?
Once you are prompted to pay (by the cashier or the terminal), simply hold your card within 1-2 inches from the terminal where you see the contactless symbol . The terminal will notify you once the payment has been completed.
What are the benefits of contactless payments?
Contactless payments are easy, convenient and secure. You can still do everything you would do with your chip card, including adding a tip, getting cash back (if applicable) and more. Unlike cash, contactless payments let you keep better records of your purchases and increases the speed in which your transactions are processed.
How does this technology compare to using my BB&T debit or credit card in a mobile wallet, like Apple Pay?
Contactless payments use the same near-field communication (NFC) technology as mobile wallets, such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. As with mobile wallets, you’ll continue to enjoy all the benefits of using your card, just as if you had swiped or inserted it into the checkout terminal.
Where can I pay with my contactless BB&T debit or credit card?
Millions of merchants around the world accept contactless payments, including fast-food restaurants, grocery stores, pharmacies and more. If the terminal is not contactless-enabled, you will be prompted to insert or swipe your card.
Are contactless payments safe?
Yes. Paying with your contactless BB&T debit and credit card is safe for a number of reasons:
- Just like with a chip card, each transaction is accompanied by a one-time security code that securely protects your payment information.
- You can’t pay accidentally – your card must be within 1-2 inches of the terminal for the transaction to occur (and you won’t be billed twice, even if you accidentally tap twice).
Can people "skim" information off of a contactless card?
Contactless cards are as secure as the EMV chip card. For every contactless transaction, a transaction-specific code is created that secures the cardholder's payment information. Because of the nature of the code and additional fraud protection processes, it's difficult to use skimmed cardholder information for fraudulent purchases.
Can I still use my contactless BB&T debit or credit card for online and over-the-phone purchases?
Yes, the process for providing your card information has not changed.
Will contactless transactions require a signature or PIN?
Entering a PIN or signing for a transaction will depend on the merchant and type of transaction.
Simply insert the chip end of your card into the terminal with the chip facing up, leave it in the terminal while you use the keypad to complete the transaction and remove your card when prompted.
You'll have enhanced fraud protection when using a BB&T chip card at a chip-enabled terminal. It generates a unique code with each transaction, reducing the risk of stolen data being used fraudulently.
More than 130 countries around the world, including Canada, Mexico and most European countries, accept chip cards. You can also still swipe them to pay anywhere a chip-enabled terminal is not available.
Frequently asked questions about chip cards
What is a chip card?
Along with increased global acceptance, your BB&T credit and debit cards include an embedded microchip that provides an extra layer of fraud protection for in-person point-of-sale transactions when making purchases at merchants who use chip-enabled terminals.
Is there an additional fee for a chip card?
No. We provide this added security feature at no additional cost.
How does my BB&T chip card work?
Instead of swiping your card, just insert the chip end of your card into the terminal with the chip facing up. Leave your card in the terminal and follow the prompts on the screen. Remove your card from the terminal when indicated.
Why do I need to leave my card in the terminal?
The chip in your card adds an additional layer of information protection. While your card is in the chip-enabled terminal, the embedded microchip creates a unique transaction code that reduces the risk of stolen data being used fraudulently. If you remove your card too soon, your transaction will be canceled.
Can I swipe my card to pay?
Yes. If a merchant terminal is not equipped to read the chip, you'll need to swipe your card. Merchants who accept credit and debit cards must accept all valid cards regardless of whether the card has a chip.
If you swipe your credit or debit card and the terminal has chip technology turned on, you'll be prompted to insert your chip card into the card slot.
When can I use my chip card?
Your BB&T chip card still includes a magnetic stripe, so you can use it anywhere, even if the merchant doesn't have a chip-enabled terminal. Merchants are actively installing chip-enabled terminals at their locations. Chip cards are currently in use or are being implemented in more than 130 countries, including Canada, Mexico and most European countries.
Can I access my account at an ATM with my chip card?
Yes. You can use your chip card at the ATM to get cash, check your balance, transfer funds and more. Remember to insert the chip end of your card into the ATM with the chip facing up. Your card will remain in the ATM until your transaction is complete.
What if a merchant processes transactions with a method other than a standard terminal, such as mobile, software POS, online or over the phone?
Chip technology only affects in-person transactions. If a transaction isn't in person, such as with online payments through a shopping cart, the transaction won't process as a chip transaction. However, you can still use a chip credit or debit card number to make online purchases.
Is a credit or debit card that doesn't have a chip still considered a secure means of payment?
Will the use of chip cards prevent data breaches?
Chip card technology provides an additional layer of security to help minimize data breaches. While this technology can't prevent all security breaches, a secure payment technology is an important first line of defense.

[MUSIC PLAYING] The world keeps getting smarter, shouldn't your card be smarter too? Introducing chip technology, a more secure way to pay from Visa. Simply insert the card with the chip side up and follow the prompts. Remove the card when the purchase is complete.
Chip technology generates a unique one-time code, a feature that's virtually impossible to replicate by counterfeit cards to help eliminate in-store fraud. The card can also be used with a traditional swipe when a chip enabled terminal isn't available. Or at an ATM with a pin when needed.
Simple, secure, smart, and with zero liability protection, you're never responsible for fraudulent purchases on any Visa card. Visa, everywhere you want to be.
