BB&T and You

We protect your personal and financial information on a daily basis. For extra security, learn how you can guard your information online. Below, you'll find our recommendations to keep your confidential information safe.

What BB&T Does

We protect your information with the following tools:

User IDs and Passwords

User IDs and passwords are required to access our online services. These tools confirm your identity and prevent unauthorized access to your accounts.

Data Encryption

We use the strong encryption protocols such as Secure Socket Layer (SSL) as well as Transport Layer Security (TLS) where supported, to protect your information. These measures encrypt or scramble your information to prevent unauthorized individuals from intercepting and viewing it while it travels between your computer and our network.

Email Encryption

Where high security email communication is needed we use a separate email encryption service provided by Cisco Registered Envelope Service (CRES) for email encryption. As our industry-leading email security provider, CRES allows BB&T to securely send messages protected by strong digital encryption, and enables you to reply securely. These are just some of the measures we are taking to protect your confidential information.

Firewalls and Activity Logs

Firewalls only permit specific traffic to pass in and out of the network. In addition, we regularly review activity logs to monitor potential threats.

Timeout and Lock-Out Features

A timeout feature automatically terminates each user session after a period of inactivity. After three unsuccessful logon attempts, online account access is locked.

Limited Requests via Email

We do not use email to send private information such as your user ID, password, account number or Social Security number. In addition, we never ask our clients to send us confidential information via email.

What You Can Do

Here are a few simple ways to protect your personal information online:

Keep Your User ID and Password Private

Your user ID and password unlock your personal accounts. It is vital that you keep them confidential. Never post your password near your computer, and never give it to someone over the phone.

Select a Strong Password

When creating a password, make it difficult for anyone to guess what you have selected. Do not use your name, user ID, information easily obtained about you, consecutive keys from the keyboard, or words commonly found in the dictionary.

Never Send Confidential Information by Regular Email

Regular email can sometimes be intercepted and viewed by others.

Install Virus Protection

Viruses can gain control of your computer and record your personal information. Guard against this by installing antivirus/anti-malware software and keeping it up-to-date.
