General Information

Who should get a LEAP Account?

The LEAP Account is perfect for teens and students who want to enjoy the spending power of a Visa debit card but don't want to pay a lot in fees or risk overdrawing your account. (Note: A single applicant must be 18 to 21 years of age to be eligible for a LEAP account. If you are applying with a co-applicant, one applicant must be 18 years of age or older; the other must be 21 years of age or younger; or both applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 21.)

Can I get a LEAP Account card for another family member?

LEAP Account cards are issued only to the applicant(s) on the account application.

Can I get a joint LEAP Account?

Yes. Applicants under age 18 must have a parent or co-applicant.

Can I get more than one card for my LEAP Account?

One card is issued for an individually owned LEAP Account, and up to two cards can be issued for a joint account. Lost or stolen cards can be replaced for a nominal fee.

Getting Started

How do I sign up for a LEAP Account?

Our LEAP Account application process is quick and easy, and you may sign up online.

Will you obtain my credit report?

Yes. We'll review your credit report to help us prevent fraud and identity theft. However, your credit score or lack of credit history will not prevent you from opening a LEAP Account.

Do I need to have a checking account?

No, neither a checking account nor a previous relationship with BB&T (or any other financial institution) is required.

How do I set up direct deposit?

After you apply for the LEAP Account, print out the direct deposit form. (We'll even pre-fill most of the form for you.) Then, complete, sign and deliver it to your company/employer's payroll department.

You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view and print your direct deposit form. If you don't currently have Acrobat Reader installed, you may download it for free at your convenience.

What is a "prepaid" card? Is that different from a "reloadable" card?

A prepaid debit card allows you to spend only the amount of money in your account. Certain prepaid cards, such as gift cards, cannot be used after the prepaid money has been spent. A reloadable card, such as the LEAP Account card, is a debit card that allows you to spend only the amount of money in your account but also add (reload) money whenever you need to, so you can continue using the same card.

How can I load funds to my LEAP Account?

Adding money to your LEAP Account is easy. You can set up direct deposit, add funds at any BB&T financial center, transfer money from other BB&T accounts or visit any merchant participating in the Visa ReadyLink reload network.

What is Visa ReadyLink? How can I find a Visa ReadyLink location?

Visa ReadyLink offers a fast and easy way to load money into your LEAP Account. Visit Visa ReadyLink to find the nearest of more than 50,000 locations.

Using Your LEAP Card

Where can I use my LEAP Account card?

Your LEAP Account card can be used wherever Visa debit cards are accepted. You can make purchases or payments in stores, online or by phone, with a $1,500 daily point of sale spending limit (including cash advances).

Can I use the account to pay bills?

Yes, you can use the LEAP Account to pay bills in person, over the phone or with the Payments & Transfers feature of online banking.

Can I use the card to shop online?

Yes, your LEAP Account card can be used for online purchases, wherever Visa debit cards are accepted. 

Can I withdraw funds from any ATM?

You can withdraw funds from any ATM that displays the Visa or Plus logo, up to your $1,500 daily ATM withdrawal limit. If you use one of 2,400 ATMs within the BB&T network, there are no transaction or service fees.

If you would like to withdraw funds from an ATM outside of the BB&T network, you may incur fees.

Can I get cash back?

Yes, you can get cash back at many participating merchant locations, such as grocery stores and drug stores.

What should I know about transactions made at gas stations, hotels, restaurants and car rental agencies?

Transactions where the final purchase amount is not known at the time you present your card are processed differently than most other purchases. These special transactions may be handled differently by different merchants. If you are unsure of a merchant's policy, it’s best to ask before presenting your card.

  • Gas stations will accept the LEAP Account card to prepay for fuel inside the station, but "pay at the pump" transactions are not allowed.
  • Restaurants, hotels, car rental agencies may authorize more than final purchase amount.

What are account alerts?

BB&T Alerts are messages from BB&T that you can get by email or through your mobile device. You can set up alerts to keep tabs on your account or to notify you when important account activities occur.1

What is online banking?

Online Banking is a safe and convenient Internet banking service. You can bank online from anywhere you have Internet access, including your mobile phone. Use online banking to check balances, transfer funds, pay bills and set up alerts.1

What is mobile banking?

Mobile banking is a way for you to bank anytime, anywhere, from your mobile device. BB&T offers convenient mobile banking options, including the U by BB&T Mobile App and Mobile Text.1

Can I accidentally spend more than the balance on my card?

No. The LEAP Account is designed to allow you to spend only the amount you've deposited.

Can my card ever have a negative balance?

It's possible that a Visa merchant may put an item through without prior authorization. For example, a restaurant may automatically add an 18% gratuity to your bill's total, and BB&T would be obligated to pay for such an item. If the amount of the transaction exceeds the amount in your account, this may result in a negative balance.

In the unlikely event of such a situation, the amount of the negative balance will automatically be deducted from the next deposit that is made to your LEAP Account, and you would not be charged an overdraft fee.


What if my LEAP Account card is lost or stolen?

If your LEAP Account card gets lost or stolen—or if the account number is misused by someone else—you will be reimbursed for 100% of any unauthorized transactions.

Are the funds in my account FDIC insured?

Yes. All LEAP Account funds are FDIC insured. Learn more about FDIC Insurance coverage and limits.


Is it possible to incur overdraft fees with this account?

No. The LEAP Account has been designed so that you'll never incur overdraft fees.

Are there any fees associated with the LEAP Account?

Yes, there is a standard $3 monthly maintenance fee. Additional fees, such as those for ATM withdrawals outside of the BB&T network, may apply depending on your activity. See our fee schedule for full details.

What is a foreign ATM fee?

A foreign ATM fee (also known as a foreign transaction fee) is a fee charged to a cardholder for using an ATM outside of a bank's network. You can avoid this fee by using one of the more than 2,400 BB&T ATMs located across 12 states and Washington, DC.
